The milky green-colored fruits with white flesh comes in different shape, the most common being the bottle shaped and round. High water content fruit, rich in dietary fibers. It is rich in, thiamine, vitamin C, zinc, iron and magnesium thus helping in improving overall health.

Gourds (Cucurbitaceae) are among the oldest cultivated plants. They were the early water bottles of the Egyptians (2200 or 2400 B.C.), and were traditionally used as utensils, storage containers, and dippers by indigenous peoples in North America. Most gourds are native to tropical or warm temperate climates. They require a long growing season to mature and are killed by frost.

How to Grow: Bottle gourd should be grown in open and sunny locations. Gourd requires full sun and thrives well in a temperature range of 25 to 35 degrees celsius with well drained soil. Sandy loam soils rich in organic matter with good drainage and the pH ranges from 6.5 to 7.5. Seeds can be directly sown in soil, it takes 50 to 60 days to mature and fruits for a longer period of time. Bottle gourd plant requires plenty of watering for growth. It requires abundant moisture all the time. Seeds are sown at 5 x 2 m spacing

Sowing Season: It is grown in kharif (June-August) and January – April season.
