A special and kind that grows in Kerala and has pods that resemble elephant tusks and are 8 to 12 inches long. They yield over an extended period of time. The pods retain their bright green hue and are at their tastiest when still soft.

Also known as Lady’s Finger, Gumbo or Bhindi; Okra is one of the most popular plants grown in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Part of the genus Abelmoschus and family Malvaceae, Okra is known to be a part of the mallow family, that includes cotton and hibiscus. It is a warm season vegetable, valued for its tender edible pods. Okra is rich in minerals, vitamins (C and K), carbohydrates, antioxidants and dietary fibre.

Days to Germinate: 5-6 days

Days to Harvest: 50-60 days

How to Grow: Okra may be grown from seed relatively easily. It enjoys full sun, moderate moisture—as long as the soil doesn’t dry up completely—and healthy, well-draining soil. The ideal soil pH range is between 6.5 and 7.5 and ideal temperature is 25-35 degrees Celsius. Sow seeds of this heat-loving plant indoors 2-3 weeks before transplanting, which should happen several weeks after the last frost, or when soil temperatures stay above 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Soak seeds overnight for quicker germination, and plant 3/4″ deep. Space 18″ in rows 12-18″ apart. Beds should be at least 3′ apart as plants tend to bush out widely. Okra likes fertile, well-drained soil with added compost.

To prevent weed development and help plants retain moisture, spread a layer of mulch around them. During the entire growth season, fertilise using a balanced vegetable fertiliser. Give your plants the most favourable conditions you can, including as much sun exposure and water as they need. Every day, take a stroll in your garden and keep an eye out for insects. Keep in mind that helpful insects like ladybugs are your buddies, so let them stay!

Sowing Season: Grown in kharif (June-August) and Zaid (January-March) season.

Germination Rate: 75%

Seed Preservation: Okra is insect pollinated. Isolate different okra varieties by at least 1/8th of a mile (or up to 1/2 mile if you are truly concerned about seed purity) to avoid unwanted cross pollination. Allow pods to grow large and turn brown and woody (your neighbors may look at you funny). When you can hear the seeds rattle, harvest the pod and allow it to dry further on trays in the sun in a dry place. Remove seeds and use breath, wind, or fans to remove bits of chaff.
