Forest Okra Seeds

100.00

Grows with giant leaves, heavy fruits and to a height of 6 to 8 feet tall. Needs a spacing of 2 metres in between each plant. These are very tasty and plumpy fruits with high yielding ability.

Days to Germinate: 5-6 days

Days to Harvest: 60 days

How to Grow: Okra may be grown from seed relatively easily. It enjoys full sun, moderate moisture—as long as the soil doesn’t dry up completely—and healthy, well-draining soil. The ideal soil pH range is between 6.5 and 7.5 and ideal temperature is 25-35 degrees Celsius. Sow seeds of this heat-loving plant indoors 2-3 weeks before transplanting, which should happen several weeks after the last frost, or when soil temperatures stay above 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Soak seeds overnight for quicker germination, and plant 3/4″ deep. Space 1 metre in rows 2 metre apart. Beds should be at least 3′ apart as plants tend to bush out widely. Okra likes fertile, well-drained soil with added compost.

To prevent weed development and help plants retain moisture, spread a layer of mulch around them. During the entire growth season, fertilise using a balanced vegetable fertiliser. Give your plants the most favourable conditions you can, including as much sun exposure and water as they need. Every day, take a stroll in your garden and keep an eye out for insects. Keep in mind that helpful insects like ladybugs are your buddies, so let them stay!

Sowing Season: Grown in kharif (June-August) and Zaid (January-March) season.

Seed Preservation: Okra is insect pollinated. Isolate different okra varieties by at least 1/8th of a mile (or up to 1/2 mile if you are truly concerned about seed purity) to avoid unwanted cross pollination. Allow pods to grow large and turn brown and woody (your neighbors may look at you funny). When you can hear the seeds rattle, harvest the pod and allow it to dry further on trays in the sun in a dry place. Remove seeds and use breath, wind, or fans to remove bits of chaff. You too can be a seedkeeper and help HOOGA in the fight to preserve native seeds. Call us to know more!
